SURGICAL HAIR TRANSPLANT

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring hair in areas of thinning or baldness. While the core steps remain similar across clinics, the exact techniques can vary based on the doctor and clinic.

How it Works

The process begins with a consultation, where the doctor evaluates the extent of hair loss and discusses the number of grafts required and the areas to be treated. Blood tests are typically required to ensure you are fit for surgery. Once the results come in, the procedure can be scheduled

On the day of surgery, you may be given a mild sedative to help you relax. The doctor will then apply local anesthesia to numb both the donor and recipient areas. While some describe the sensation as mild, the anesthesia injections can be quite uncomfortable, but the pain is short-lived once the anesthesia takes effect.

The next step involves removing the donor strip from the back of your scalp, typically measuring 1–1.5 cm in width and 15–20 cm or longer in length. To extract the donor strip, you will be positioned face-down on a special headrest. Afterward, the doctor stitches up the donor area to close it.

Once the donor strip is harvested, a team of trained specialists will carefully divide it under a microscope into individual follicular units, each containing one to four hair follicles. This process ensures that the hair follicles are kept intact and ready for implantation.

Next, tiny incisions are made in the recipient area (the area experiencing hair loss) where the follicular units will be implanted. The precision of these incisions is critical to achieving a natural look. At some clinics, doctors use specialized instruments that allow for greater density and precision.

Once the incisions are prepared, the hair follicles are implanted. This step may involve a team of professionals, with one person creating incisions while another implants the grafts. The doctor ensures that the hair is placed in a pattern that will look natural as it grows.

After the procedure, the doctor will guide you on post-operative care, which includes how to care for your scalp to ensure optimal healing. The newly transplanted hair will fall out within the first two weeks due to the natural shedding process, but don’t be alarmed—this is normal.

It typically takes between 3 to 12 months for the new hair to start growing. For the first week or two, you may want to cover the grafts with a loose hat to hide the scabs. Most people can resume normal activities within 24 hours, though it’s advisable to avoid heavy physical activity initially.

Medications & Healing

You’ll likely be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection, a mild steroid to reduce swelling, and painkillers to help with any discomfort. While the procedure itself is manageable, the real challenge is waiting for the transplanted hair to grow. Be prepared for a period of patience as your new hair gradually fills in.
